Mega Millions Prize Breakdown

As mentioned, there are huge prizes to be had in Mega Millions. Winners enjoy the fact that they know exactly what they’ll win in most categories, since there are usually set amounts allocated to all tiers except the jackpot. That means there’s no need to share a category’s prize money with others, AND one of those prizes is set at $1 million!

The main prize amount depends on how many tickets the operator sells and how much money rolled over from the previous draw. Here’s what you can look forward to.

CategoryNumbers MatchedPrize
15+1MBJackpot (based on sales)
25$1,000,000 (~ZAR 18,000,000)
34+1MB$10,000 (~ZAR 180,000)
44$500 (~ZAR 9,000)
53+1MB$200 (~ZAR 3,600)
63$10 (~ZAR 180)
72+1MB$10 (~ZAR 180)
81+1MB$4 (~ZAR 72)

Helpful notes when playing Mega Millions online:

  • Pari-mutuel systems: In the US a few states use ticket sales to determine all payout amounts. This is called a pari-mutuel system. But in general, the amounts displayed above applies to most Mega Millions players. When using online lottery agents, do check what their prize offerings are, so you know what to expect and then use the lottery sites most suited to your preferences.
  • Multipliers: Some US states and online lottery sites offer a chance to boost your prize money with the Megaplier feature. You’ll pay a little extra to add this to your ticket. For tiers 2 to 9 your prize money can then be multiplied by the Megaplier number. This can be any number between 2 and 5 and the Multiplier is picked during the draw.
  • Just the Jackpot: Some operators offer an opportunity to play for the jackpot only. It requires a minimal fee and you get two chances to bet on the set of winning numbers. This is an exciting feature, but remember your set of numbers won’t make you eligible for any other prizes, only the main prize.

Mega Millions Draw Schedule

Mega Millions operators help keep your week interesting thanks to not just one but two draws a week. This also helps grow the jackpot fairly quickly, since a rollover system is in place.

Day of the WeekTimeTime for South African Players
Tuesday11pm (EST)Wednesday 5am
Friday11pm (EST)Saturday 5am

Note: because the draw takes place so late in the day in the US, it may already be the next day in other time zones. This means many international players will only be able to check Mega Millions results on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

How to Claim a Mega Millions Prize

The benefit of playing Mega Millions online is that much of the claims process is automated. So, soon after a draw the money may appear in your players account. However, it’s your responsibility to monitor that you’ve received the funds and you should plan for withdrawal to your bank account, as waiting periods may apply.

If you play in person in the US, there are also guidelines to keep in mind. Here’s a summary to help you stay organised after finding out you’ve won a prize.

Online lottery sites not directly affiliated with Mega Millions all have unique policies. Review their guidelines to know what to expect. Usually, the following applies:

  • Winnings paid to your players account soon after the draw – no claims process necessary.
  • Strict verification process to withdraw money to a bank account.
  • Withdrawal approval process that can take a few days.
Buying official tickets via lottery agents

You can expect:

  • Notification of winning a prize.
  • Waiting period before receiving money because the lottery agent will pay you after receiving the money from the Mega Millions operator.
  • Automated deposits to your account on the lottery platform.
  • Waiting period when requesting a withdrawal to your bank account.
  • Large prizes – especially jackpots – may require you to travel and claim in person.

Yes, the Mega Millions lottery follows rollover rules. Therefore, the jackpot grows every time it’s not won. The ticket sales of the days following the draw will result in another amount being added to the existing jackpot.

In comparison to similar lotteries, Mega Millions has more challenging odds than some others.
