Eurojackpot Odds of Winning

In Europe, 18 countries band together to offer one of the most exciting lotteries in the world! And thanks to online lottery sites you can join in the fun. That means you can win prizes as big as €120 million

Being a lottery where you need to pick 7 numbers correctly, the odds of winning are very different to its counterparts in the US – Powerball and Mega Millions – that use 6-number sequences. Also, there are more prize categories!

Here are your chances of winning in one of the 12 tiers, displayed in detail.

Eurojackpot Prize Breakdown

Part of the excitement when playing Eurojackpot is discovering exactly how much you’ll win. You won’t know this until the results are published because the operators use a prize pool based on ticket sales to allocate money to each prize tier.

Eurojackpot uses a pari-mutuel system. Therefore, a percentage of the prize pool is allocated to a tier. as shown in the table below. In addition, you’ll share the amount with all other winners in that category.

CategoryNumbers MatchedPrize Pool %Average Prize Amount

Interesting facts:

  • The minimum jackpot you can expect to win is €10 million, since this is the starting jackpot after a main prize is won.
  • This is a capped jackpot. Operators adjust rules from time to time and in the past it was set at €90 million. Currently the jackpot cap is €120 million.

Eurojackpot Draw Schedule

South African players enjoy European games like Eurojackpot because of the similar time zones. There’s only a one-hour time difference! This makes it possible to check results while most people are still awake, instead of the draw taking place while many SA locals are in bed (as is the case with some US lotteries).

You have two chances every week to be a Eurojackpot winner.

How to Claim a Eurojackpot Prize

When playing Eurojackpot online, players outside of Europe can either bet on the outcome, or obtain official tickets. This is made possible by lottery sites such as theLotter. The claims process for these international players are different to players purchasing tickets in one of the 18 countries that host Eurojackpot.

Here’s a summary for clarification.

Method of PlayGuidelines
Buy ticket at retailer in a participating country
  • Smaller prizes usually claimed at retail outlets
  • Larger prizes require visit to payment centers, associated banks or operator headquarters
  • Each country has its own guidelines
Purchase ticket online from operator’s official apps or sites
  • Small prizes are usually paid out automatically, into a player’s account associated with the online platform
  • Larger prizes require in person visits to prize outlets, or request payment to be made
  • Countries’ guidelines differ from each other
Use a lottery site and bet on Eurojackpot results

Always review the platform’s policies because vendors differ. The following are general rules that usually apply:

  • You can expect winnings to be paid into your player wallet automatically.
  • You can request a withdrawal to your bank account but may need to follow a verification process.
  • Wait for money to be paid over within a few days.
Use a lottery service that purchases official Eurojackpot tickets on your behalf

Consult the service’s guidelines for exact steps, but expect the following to apply:

  • Service notifies you of a win.
  • The lottery service requests and receives money from lottery operators. This may take a few days.
  • Payment is made to your player account.
  • You have the option to withdraw the money. Put in a request.
  • Lottery service reviews your payout request.
  • Receive approval and wait a few days for money to appear in your account.

Note that many lottery services of this kind expect you to claim and receive jackpot prizes in person. This can require travel to Europe to complete the transaction. Check with the vendor’s policies if they’ll cover the travel expenses.

FAQs

You can take part in two Eurojackpot draws each week. The lottery takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays, at 21:00 EEST. South Africans are in a different time zone to Helsinki where the draws take place, so it takes place at 20:00 for local players.

In certain European countries the results are shown on TV, but countries have different approaches to showcasing the results. The draws for Eurojackpot are recorded live and you can watch footage of these draws by using YouTube.

For small amounts, European players can request payments from retail outlets or expect immediate payment in their online accounts. Larger prizes may require more elaborate procedures. For international players that use lottery sites, small amounts are often paid out quickly, but requesting a withdrawal to your personal account can take a few business days.

The rules about claim periods differ between countries. So, if you have an official ticket, you need to check where it was purchased. Claim periods in certain countries are also dependent on the size of the prize. The claim period can be anything between 30 days and 3 years.

The Eurojackpot does roll over when it’s not won. However, there is a jackpot cap, so it won’t increase indefinitely. Currently, the jackpot cap is set at €120 million.

The excellent odds are some of the reasons people enjoy Eurojackpot. Compared to Mega Millions, it’s much easier to walk away with the main prize. However, in South Africa you’ll find games with large jackpots with even better odds though. For example, SA Powerball’s odds of 1 in 42,375,200 of winning the jackpot makes it much easier to win than Eurojackpot.
